Wind Vanes

Wind vanes determine wind direction. Evaluation of the wind direction enables the best possible positioning of wind turbines. Ammonit wind vanes offer an excellent, fine resolution of 1°, while having very low energy consumption. It is essential that a wind vane covers an entire 360° degree radius, without a north gap. Cheaper wind vanes often have lower quality internal electro-mechanic fittings, which limit their life span, and a considerable north gap. Most wind vanes can be equipped with electronically regulated heating. Digital (TMR) and potentiometric wind vanes are available.

Wind Vanes TMR vs. Wind Vanes POT

With the digital channels of the new Ammonit Meteo-40 data logger, digital wind vanes TMR (Tunnel Magneto Resistance) can easily be connected, i.e. Thies First Class TMR 10-bit serial-synchron and Thies Compact TMR 10-bit serial-synchron.   • are offered at a lower price than potentiometer wind vanes.

  • are subject to less mechanical wear than potentiometer wind vanes thanks to their solid state design. Wind vanes TMR do not have moving parts, except the bearings. Thus digital wind vanes TMR are more reliable and less susceptible to failure.

  • deliver more precise measurement values (see table below).
