Remote Sensing Systems for professional wind measurement

Remote sensing systems measure the wind conditions vertically with instruments installed on the ground. Wind speed and wind direction data even from rotor blade tip-height is available to calculate wind power for the whole rotor blade area. There are two popular remote sensing types: SoDAR (Sonic Detection and Ranging) and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). SoDAR instruments measure wind conditions by means of sound; LiDAR instruments use light to determine wind conditions.

AQ510 has been successfully classified according to IEC 61400-12-1:2017. BBB Umwelttechnik considers the AQ510 to be the best SoDAR system on the market. In the verification process, AQ510 has performed even better than some LiDAR systems, explains BBB. Additionally, BBB underlines the low manufacturing tolerance of the AQ510, which ensures continuous top quality measurements.

DNV GL also performed a performance verification of AQ510. The SoDAR successfully passed all acceptance criteria with good results. DNV GL considers AQ510 to be able to reproduce cup anemometer wind speed and wind vane directions in simple terrain.

Ecofys reports overall high correlation and exact linear regression fit, which indicate that the SoDAR is functioning properly with high accurracy. Ecofys judges that the AQ510 is suitable for field measurements as a replacement of cup anemometers in flat terrain.

Full IEC classification for AQ510 Wind Finder
AQ510 Wind Finder achieved full IEC compliance by performing a complete IEC classification. AQ510 Wind Finder is the only SoDAR on the market with a full IEC classification.

ZX 300 has been successfully classified according to IEC 61400-12-1:2017. According to DNV GL, ZX 300 is accepted for bankable wind speed and energy assessments in simple terrain (Stage 3*).

Results from 170 verification tests demonstrate reliability and repeatability of the ZX 300 LiDAR device.

* DNV GL describes Stage 3 as follows: A device is considered proven for use in the assessment of wind farm sites. The data may be used quantitatively within formal wind speed and energy assessments with only limited or no site-specific validations against conventional anemometry.
